This post isn’t going to be very wordy because I need to get on the road, but here are the pictures from Lazlo’s birthday. One summer when we both happened to be living in Texas, we went to a lot of minor league baseball games in Frisco — the Roughriders — and got really into the players and scores and everything. So since we’re both in Texas again and there was a game on her birthday, I thought it would be fun if the two of us went again.
Oh. My. Gosh. I don’t know about her, but I had tons of fun. I’m so glad we did it. It wasn’t even unbearably hot. We were in the shade the whole time — right behind the Roughriders’ dugout — and there was a nice cool breeze the whole night as well.
I got Lesley a nice pin to wear during the game and brought along some sunglasses for us as well.
This is the only one of us together with our glasses on that I got and I’m bummed that it’s out of focus, but there you have it. Don’t we look stunning?
Here are our boys. We actually did watch the game.
For about the first half of the game, we were ahead twelve to one. Then all of a sudden, Corpus Christie kicked it up a notch and our guys started sucking so between the first half of the game and the final score, we only got two more runs. They on the other hand scored enough runs to put us at a tie in the final inning, which made for some stress but also some adrenaline-pumping fun. But it was only fun because we ended up winning that last inning.
There was a row of boys in front of us that were hilariously entertaining, especially that short little kid with the enormous Roughriders hat on. He was our favorite kid of all time.
Here he is later in the game, never failing to entertain.
I thought it was so cool too that they all had matching mitts for the game. Later on they disappeared for a while, and right as Lesley said, “I wonder what happened to those boys,” I looked on the field and said, “Isn’t that them in the potato sack race?” And it was. They all came back with matching t-shirts from their competition.
This was another highlight of the game. The first half of the game I was dying for a Lemon Chill and we finally had to go through the ordeal of finding an ATM and then finding a vendor to sell me a Lemon Chill. Oh, but it was worth it.
I know people complain about how long games are — we were there for over four hours — but I think it gets more fun the later it gets; the stands start clearing out, the people who are left get more rambunctious, it starts getting cooler, and the score starts to matter a little more towards the end. I was surprised that people were walking out in the eighth inning when it was tied thirteen to thirteen. After investing so much time, how could you just walk away at that point?
I think it was about this time that I said very satisfactorily, “I am so happy right now. This is my best your birthday ever!”
I’m surprised there was any cotton candy left on this guy’s arm since the teenagers behind us were so hyper by the end of the game that we were fairly certain that they’d consumed every ounce of sugar on the premises.
This is one of the mascots, Daisy. The other is named Deuce but mainly hung out on the other side of the field.
Here’s Daisy playing the drum solo of Wipeout on bald guys’ heads. You can see Deuce on the other side doing the same thing. Totally random, but it cracked me up.
We decided to spread the birthday love and gave the energetic kid in front of us a pair of star sunglasses since he was eyeing Lesley’s enviously.
Aaaaand we won! At 11:00 at night. We seriously need to come back and do this again before the summer’s over. It is such a fun night out, definitely my favorite sporting event. We’ll have to bring Justin next time though.
Final score — 14 to 13. As you can see though we were killing the first half of the game and then all of a sudden our guys couldn’t catch a ball or make a run to save their lives. Grrr. Thank goodness they pulled through at the end!
Afterwards we had cake and ice cream. This is another of my mom’s expertly decorated cakes with a Beatles theme since Lesley’s obsessed with the Beatles. I guess Paul McCartney shares a birthday with her as well, which is why his name got added to the cake, per Lesley’s request.
Oh, and here we are beforehand, having a quick lunch/dinner with our Dad at Chili’s. Picture courtesy of Dad (thanks for getting that to me so fast!).
Happy Birthday, Lesley! Hope you had as much fun as I did.

Happy Birthday, Lesley! Seeing those pics makes me want to go to an Arkansas Travelers game. Love the nail polish, too!
Great pics. I love minor league games. Began watching them out in San Jose, CA. I loved the LA Dodgers back when I was young, but major league baseball was different then; and we had the LA Dodgers with Sandy Koufax, Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Don Drysdale, Frank Howard, Ron Cey…..They were GREAT to wactch. Back then, you could go in an hour before a game and get nosebleed seats for cheap (I don’t remember how cheap, but cheap!)
The scoring was interesting. The RoughRiders had 3-1-4-4 in consecutive innings in the early part of the game, the Hooks had 3-1-4-4 in consecutive innings in the latter part of the game.
yayyy birthdays. so much fun.
