Almost As Sweet As What That Kid I Didn’t Know Wrote In My 7th Grade Yearbook

November 4, 2009

While Justin has been on vacation this week, I was nice enough to write up a whole to-do list for us, mostly things around the house that we’ve been putting off for a long time (like changing light bulbs) or that I’ve gotten too pregnant to do (like moving heavy things)… or maybe just things I didn’t want to do or didn’t want to do alone. One of those things was cleaning out the closet in what is now the baby’s room.

As I was going through a drawer full of miscellaneous items — old journals, art supplies, stationary, wedding invitations — I stumbled upon a photo of Justin that he had sent me in the very early stages of our dating relationship.

For those who don’t know, Justin and I had been casual friends for a couple years while he was my brother’s roommate in college before we started dating. During those years, he moved to Ohio for medical school and I moved to Salt Lake City for fun. For spring break his first year of medical school, he flew in from Ohio to visit his old friends in Utah, and that’s the week we really hit it off and started flirting around with the idea of becoming more than friends.

Well, that week ended, but we continued to text and talk after he went back to Ohio and within those early weeks of budding long-distance romance, he sent me a little package in the mail, and one of the items in this package was this photo I stumbled on yesterday.

I smiled as I looked at the photo, remembering those beginning stages of dating and how exciting it all was. After all, it was good enough that I moved out to Ohio within two months of our flirtation to see if there was really something possible there (and we all know how that story turned out).

Expecting a sweet little early-stages-of-dating-note on the back of the photo, I turned it over, still smiling as I recalled all those memories from spring break, the insane amount of hours we put into phone calls, text messages, and IMs during those months we were apart, and the excitement of moving across the country on a hunch that there was something big happening there.

Instead, I found this: “Have a great summer.”

Be still, my beating heart.

Last week after cadaver lab, L texted me “Cadavers are nasty.” I texted back “They make my heart flutter. The smell reminds me of our 1st few months of marriage. Ahh formaldehyde & coffee – my heart’s desire.”

Ahh, young love.
My husband use to text me lyrics from Jim Croce songs. Now I’m not allow to text him, because he doesn’t want to pay for it, although his co workers text him, and he texts them back.
All I get in the way of love notes these days, are reminders to pay rent. But thats love right, he doesn’t want us on the street.
